I’ve been reading this book called Promoting Executive Function in the Classroom by Lynn Meltzer. It’s not a fun read, but it does have some pretty good tips. Especially on how to boost your child’s memory recall. As a parent of three elementary age kids, I’m always open to trying new things to make studying easier and faster. And with an end result of A and B grades.
Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been testing a few of these memory tricks. And they actually are working. Forget cramming for an exam. Instead, teach your kids how to make up fun crazy rhyming sentences or create a comical cartoon that illustrates what they are learning.
One of my son’s is born to doodle. I’ve had him create a comic about what he needed to learn on his Social Studies exam. His drawing was hilarious with lots of rough boy stuff in it. When he took his exam, he remembered his comic which contained the key points he needed to learn. The result was an A.
My daughter is more auditory so we have been creating fun sentences to help her remember things for her exam. Just this week she needed to learn the three states of matter. We came up with the following: What really matters? Love (L for liquid), Smiling (S for solid) and Goodness (G for gas).
I found that when they create their funny sentence or poem or illustration, they remember it. Not to mention, they love sharing what they created which encourages repetition.
