A lot of people are the under the impression that if they lose weight they will be healthier. Certainly in some cases this is true but by no means all. In order for this to be true you have to lose weight in a healthy way, unfortunately most weight loss programs really don’t do this. Changing to a healthy lifestyle is a far better approach since it will allow you to take the weight off and keep it off while remaining healthy.
It is important that you understand that losing weight and being healthy are not the same thing, in fact the way that a lot of people lose weight is decidedly unhealthy. The problem is that if you focus solely on losing weight you are not really doing the things that you need to in order to keep your body healthy. You need food as a fuel for to keep you going, if you starve yourself in an attempt to lose weight you are going to end up dropping the pounds but being very unhealthy.
The other thing that you have to realize is that muscle weighs more than fat does so it is very possible to become much healthier and actually look better without actually losing any weight. One of the goals that you should have as part of a healthy lifestyle should be to add muscle mass. Muscle will make your body work better and it will also increase you metabolism allowing you to burn fat at much faster rate. The problem is that if you focus solely on what the scale says you may be disappointed with the results. The goal is to lose fat not necessarily weight.
One of the problems with trying to lose weight, especially if you do it quickly is that you will actually end up losing more muscle than fat. This is actually counter productive since it is both unhealthy and it will slow your metabolism. That means that you will actually start putting on more fat. It is entirely possible to lose weight and still get fatter. Clearly this is not something that you want but it is what happens with most weight loss programs.
Rather than worry about losing weight it would make far more sense to try to live a healthy lifestyle. Try to watch what you eat and get as much exercise as possible and the fat loss will take care of itself. You will find that this approach works better since you are making lifestyle changes that you will actually stick to. One of the reasons that most weight loss programs don’t work is that they are so restrictive that nobody could possibly stick to them. You are far better off making small changes that you will actually be able to do than you are going on to some really strict program that you will have to abandon sooner or later.
Losing weight is not the same as living healthier!
